St Clair

St Clair Family Estate 'Vicars Choice' Chardonnay 2011 Malrborough
Nose: I have to be honest here...the nose reminds me of Peaches and Vanilla Ice-cream. Fruity and forward with just the right measure of oak.

Babich

Babich Irongate Hawke's Bay Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc 2010
Nose: Sweet fruit and oak aromas with violets, black and red fruits, some date and plum, hints of chocolate. No mistaking the oak stamp.
5 Stars

Palate: Blackberry and plum flavors, spiced brown oak  flavors with cacao then violets and chunky oak. Balanced, dry and well made with medium+ length and complexity. After wine tasting for the day I came back to this wine - curious - and discovered that several hours of relaxation and subtle ingress of oxygen opened this wine's potential into more complex messages. The finished increased in length and intensity and the complexities revealed a wine built for some ageing yet - minimum 5 years.

Hartford Wine Dinner Taj Hotel SFO June 19th 2012

Following a four Pinots Noir tasting with hosts Hartford Family Wine Maker Jeff Stewart and Master Sommelier Richard Dean guests sat down to a four course dinner prepared by executive Chef Srijith Gopinthan.

The menu read as follows:

The Amuse: Salmon - firm, rich, oily and flavorful - perfect!

Sweet Shrimps with doughnut nectarines, Burned peppers, Cucumbers, Basil and shrimp essence.
Served with Hartford Court Seascape Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2008.
Food: Delicate and slightly sweet overall with a range of slight to firm textures with harmony on the plate overall. Very tasting and a great beginning.
Wine: Quite full-bodied and rich in flavor, noticeable acidity and oak, buttery and creamy as well. Medium+ length and finish.

Match: Not so good - the dish was too delicate for the wine. Perhaps a Riesling or even a Pinot Gris would have been a better option. That said I enjoyed both separately. The salmon appetizer would have been just right for the wine. Still - I did get to try that match as well and was delicious!

.......................

Liberty Farm Duck Breast with pistachio, Brooks cherry variation, porcini mushrooms and duck jus.
Food: Perfectly prepared duck with a firm texture tempered by melt in the mouth flavor. The condiments on the plate, along with the duck, each provided a match with the wine. Great portion size.

Wine and match: Hartford Court Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2010 - Fragrant and distinctive with Pinosity and enough power to manage the duck and its condiments really well - a solid pairing - well done Ricahrd and  Srijith.

.......................

Lamb Loin with slow roasted English peas, mint and pea leaf melt, chanterelle buttons and lamb jus.
Food: A beautiful duo of pink, sweet and juicy loin(s), the herbaceous elements on the plate were a great contrast to the texture,  and tannin and overall structure of the wine.

Wine and match: Hartford Court Far Coast Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2009.  I loved this wine - no food needed. A delicious and noteworthy Pinot for its core of fruit and core of concentration without being over the top; balanced by fine tannins, medium+ acidity and a long finish. With the lamb - excellent - a well thought out pairing where the wine edged ahead of the food flavor and impact. In a dinner like this the wine is the hero of the evening with the Chef-de-Cuisine taking a second row seat yet still demonstrating the ability to cook an enchanting dish.

...........................

Chocolate with caramelia Mousse, Dark chocolate Ice Cream and Almond Praline Tuile
Food: If you are a chocolate and sweet dessert lover this is a really good dish for you. Plenty of sweetness  to devour as the chocolate melts.
No dessert picture - sorry - I ate it too quickly!

Wine and Match: Hartford Vineyard Old Vine Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2009. Only some Zins will pair with chocolate. This one did not - only because there was too much going on with the food. Individually the wine was dry, spicy, fruit-cake-a-licious, but too much power for the plate and not sweet enough.

Thanks again for a great evening - had a long discussion with Wine Maker Jeff Stewart and am looking forward to the next opportunity to try more of his wines.

Hartford Court 2009 Maclean's Dance, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir (Bio-dynamically farmed vineyard)
(Tasted at the Taj Hotel - Wine Maker's Dinner June 19th 2012)
Nose: A family of light red fruits - with their darker versions showing - dark cherry, plum and a touch of black fruit. Of the four wines in this tasting this example showed the most complexity, mystery and charm.

Palate: Dry, firm and showing the complexity suggested on the nose with added richness and great potential. The acid especially has a sparkle and brightness. Texture means a lot in a fine Pinot Noir and this wine does not disappoint - somewhat of an iron fist in a velvet glove - meaning - invest in this wine if you can and be rest assured it will cellar and reward for several years to come.

Hartford Family Winery

Hartford Court 2009 'Land's Edge', Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
(Tasted at the Taj Hotel - Wine Maker's Dinner June 19th 2012)
Nose: A cooler climate - leaner fruit profile with a blend of sweet light red fruits and an herbal note which adds some subtle complexity. The bouquet is youthful and still in a development phase.

Palate: Firm and dry with bite, power and presence. A wine with pinosity and personality. Medium++ tannins, medium to medium+ acidity, a hint of warmth from the alcohol (14.8%), a balanced and fine finish. I would decant for service or cellar for a further 2 to 4 years and then take another look.

Hartford Court 2009 Fog Dance, Russian River Valley (Or Green Valley) Pinot Noir
(Tasted at the Taj Hotel - Wine Maker's Dinner June 19th 2012)
Nose:A wine with feminine touches to the bouquet: a captivating mix of layers of spice from oak and a light (gentle) silty soil/mineral blend - then - aromas of light red fruits and lightly spiced oak.

Palate: The siltly/mineral signature on the nose returns on the palate. Flavors of yellow, red, sweet and sour cherry and even a little cranberry along with fine tannins, medium + (ish) acidity and a village Burgundy feel make for a very enjoyable taste experience. The oak is again not a big feature on this example, but adds complexity and even a little charm.

Hartford Family Winery

Hartford Court 2009 Sevens Bench Vineyard, Carneros Pinot Noir
(Tasted at the Taj Hotel - Wine Maker's Dinner June 19th 2012)
Nose: A gentle aromatic start, but then a wave of juicy fruits emerges - yet still with an appealing softness. There is Pinosity here too - cherry and strawberry suggestions, rose perfumes and red apple skin.

Palate: Reflects the nose with a sediment/soil suggestion embraced by fine tannins and yet another layer of juicy fruit flavors. Some gentle brown spice notes reflect the use of oak. Although a little warm on the palate this wine is balanced and well made.

Tatty Bogler

Tatty Bogler 2010 Pinot Gris Central Otago
Nose: A savory, fruity and stony complexity greets the nose; typical apple skin and pear skin suggestions with a light citrus appeal (grape fruit and tangerine). Moderate complexity, youthful and inviting aromatics.
5 Stars

Palate: Just off-dry with a definitive citrus then tree fruit flavors - yum!
I really like the contrast from nose to palate with this wine - there is of course varietal white flesh fruit signatures, but with additional citrus fruit profile this wine shows an 'X' factor I'm sure many who drink Pinot Gris will like.
The texture is also a feature with this wine, medium+ acidity and length, balanced and well made.

Tatty Bogler

Tatty Bogler 2011 Pinot Noir Rose Central Otago
Nose: Strawberry, light red cherry with a touch of maraschino, pink candy floss and sweet rose bouquet. In other words a rose to take notice of.

There is a well tuned balance between the fruit, alcohol and savory elements. Perhaps some old barrel influence. Overall a dry finishing wine with medium+ acidity - great drinking now and through 2013.
